Overview
MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded by the 12S rRNA gene. It functions as an exercise mimetic, activating AMPK and improving metabolic homeostasis. It represents a new class of mitochondrial signaling peptides.
Mechanism of Action
Activates AMPK pathway → increases glucose uptake → enhances fatty acid oxidation → improves mitochondrial function → acts as a retrograde signal from mitochondria to the nucleus.
