Overview

Humanin is a 24-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded by the 16S rRNA gene. It was discovered as a neuroprotective factor against Alzheimer disease and has since been found to have broad cytoprotective and anti-aging effects.

Mechanism of Action

Binds IGFBP-3 and BAX → anti-apoptotic signaling → activates STAT3 pathway → reduces oxidative stress → modulates insulin sensitivity → mitochondrial protection → interaction with formyl peptide receptor-like 1.
